Esophageal manometry is used to evaluate how well the esophagus is working by measuring the contractions that enable swallowing. The instrument used by the doctor is a small tube containing sensors that is passed through the nose, down the esophagus, into the stomach. The procedure may be used to diagnose GERD, Barrett’s Esophagus, and other conditions of the esophagus.
Esophageal manometry is conducted in the office with local anesthetic to alleviate discomfort to the throat. Patients will need to take important steps to prepare for the procedure.
